Trupa s-a infiintat in vara anului 1996, cand Tuomas Holopainen (conceptie muzicala, Keyboards, versuri) si Ernno (Emppu) Vuorinen (chitara), prieteni din copilarie, au rugat-o pe Tarja Turunen (N.B.: fosta colega de scoala!) sa cante cu ei in ceea ce intentiona sa fie la momentul respectiv doar un proiect de muzica acustica. Timbrul si intensitatea speciala a vocii Tarjei, formata pentru un repertoriu clasic, l-au determinat pe Tuomas sa-si schimbe planurile initiale, indreptandu-se catre metalul melodic – progresiv. Celor trei li s-au alaturat imediat Jukka Nevalainen (baterie) si Sami Vanska (bass), care a fost inlocuit in 2001 de Marko Hietala.
In cei sapte ani de la infiintare, finlandezii au reusit sa fie ovationati in toata lumea, editand cu succes 6 albume, doua DVD-uri si mai multe single-uri. Incepand cu 1997, toate albumele produse le-au adus discuri de aur si platina!
